Philip Morris International mobilizes a global workforce with MobileIron solutions

Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) is the leading global tobacco company. It produces seven of the world’s top 15 international brands, including Marlboro, the world’s best-selling cigarette brand. PMI’s international and local brands are sold in more than 180 markets. In 2012, PMI held an estimated 16.3% share of the total international cigarette market outside of the United States. The company’s diverse global workforce of 87,000 employees speaks more than 80 languages and hails from all corners of the globe. Headquartered in New York, with global operations based in Lausanne, Switzerland, PMI recorded revenues of $31 billion in 2012.

To support a mobile program that was rapidly growing worldwide, PMI worked with Nomasis to implement the MobileIron enterprise mobility management (EMM) platform. PMI uses MobileIron to secure corporate-issued and employee-owned devices, maintain an accurate device count across 60 countries, reset employee passcodes in seconds, and manage its growing lineup of productivity apps.

“iPads everywhere” puts it on the spot

As it seeks to further grow its business, Philip Morris International (PMI) doesn’t want its employees tied to desks. Instead, the company seeks to give its workforce the powerful mobile devices they need to remain productive anywhere. PMI IT department needed a way to automate processes that would guarantee the same level of security on all devices as well as providing a central platform for reporting and monitoring.

“In our journey to mobilize our workforce, we had been deploying iOS devices at a very rapid pace and in many countries in parallel” recalls Stéphane Quenson, Manager of End User Technology, PMI. “But now the time had come to establish a consistent level of governance and control over these devices worldwide.”

PMI wanted to do more than keep track of how many mobile devices were connecting to its corporate network. The company also needed to provide consistent security on its company issued iOS devices, and to wipe corporate data from jailbroken or missing devices. All this while maintaining the philosophy of cloaking the security and technology behind the scenes to keep it simple for end users. "With a laptop, IT is the administrator, but with a mobile device, the user is the only administrator," Quenson explains. "So we wanted a solution that would improve our management of the risk of data being leaked outside the company."

With its mobile program continuing to expand rapidly, PMI knew it needed to get this purchase decision right. After requesting proposals from a range of vendors and an extensive comparison analysis, PMI selected MobileIron and its local Swiss integrator, Nomasis. PMI went live within less than four months and worked with Nomasis to configure its new solution for optimal results.

“We started off with limited knowledge about what a solution like MobileIron could do,” says Quenson. “Nomasis was instrumental in helping us go live quickly and then scale up to support our growing number of devices.”

Mobile employees are productive employees

PMI now uses MobileIron to manage 20,000 devices in 60 countries. The company plans to scale up to 25,000 devices by the end of 2013, of which 75% iOS devices and 25% Android devices connecting to its network. The company’s IT department can now centrally monitor all mobile devices in use worldwide. And because MobileIron has enabled PMI to create distinct security profiles for corporate-issued and employee-owned devices, the company has started a roll out of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program that gives its employees even greater flexibility to work the way they want to work.

“MobileIron has made it easier for us to introduce a mobility program that helps employees remain effective no matter what device they’re using,” says Quenson. “Instead of a process being held up because someone is out of the office, employees are reviewing and approving requests in a few clicks from their secured mobile devices.”

As PMI’s employees around the world perform their daily duties in the office and on the road, PMI’s IT staff can rest assured that all devices connecting to the network have been adequately secured. When an employee loses their passcode, IT can simply reset it within MobileIron—rather than wiping the entire device and forcing the employee to spend one to two hours reinstalling apps.

Meanwhile, PMI continues to work closely with Nomasis and MobileIron to get the most out of its MobileIron platform. The companies recently partnered to upgrade PMI to the latest version of MobileIron, enabling PMI to access new functionality that will help it support more devices and its library of mobile apps.

Getting a better handle on mobile apps

A key part of PMI’s mobile strategy is to give employees the mobile apps they need to stay productive on the road. The large portfolio of company apps—mostly designed for the iOS platform—include programs designed specifically for consumers, retailers, and employees, including top executives. Many of these apps are localized and have specific brand requirements, thus require special delivery methods. With about 100 new apps becoming available each month, PMI plans to replace its in-house developed solution with MobileIron Apps@Work.

“Our apps have really enhanced the way we interact with our consumers and retailers,” says Quenson. “MobileIron Apps@Work will help us to continue to differentiate ourselves from the competition by enabling employees to access corporate data securely and efficiently through the right applications at the right time.”

Partnership helps shape the future of mobility

The relationship between PMI and MobileIron runs deeper than mere customer-vendor interaction. PMI retains a customer advocate within MobileIron for speedy response to technical issues, and actively contributes feedback and new ideas as a member of MobileIron’s customer council.

“We’ve been impressed by MobileIron’s long-term vision for the future of mobility,” remarks Quenson. “They’re really on top of things, they listen to their customers—and we’ve been delighted with our overall relationship.”

Nomasis, too, rates the partnership highly. “When you try to select a vendor in a domain that’s changing so quickly, it can be tough to pick the winner,” says Martin Blattmann, Account Manager, Nomasis. “But MobileIron was in the top Gartner quadrant for three years in a row. And based on PMI’s results with MobileIron so far, we’re convinced we bet on the right company!”
