Cordaan improves quality of care with MobileIron

Headquartered in the Netherlands, Cordaan is a leading healthcare provider that serves more than 20,000 people in 100 locations across Amsterdam and nearby regions. The company maintains a workforce of nearly 6,000 employees and more than 2,500 volunteers who assist patients in their homes or in managed healthcare facilities. Cordaan provides a range of healthcare services to elderly residents as well as children and adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues.
To better meet the complex needs of its patients, Cordaan decided to mobilize its workforce to ensure healthcare workers could quickly access patient data and resources while visiting residents in their homes. The company initially deployed 1,200 multi-OS devices to mobile clinicians. To securely manage the devices, apps, and data, Cordaan evaluated a few enterprise mobility management (EMM) vendors including AirWatch and MobileIron. Ultimately, after evaluating and consulting with their technology partner Vodafone, Cordaan chose MobileIron for its superior technical support and multi-layered security options to support their mobility initiatives.
Secure, mobile healthcare resources improve care delivery and productivity
Cordaan wanted to help clinicians spend more time providing care and less time doing paperwork. To support this goal, the company created a secure healthcare portal providing secure access with MobileIron Web@Work. The portal has a user-friendly interface that closely resembles iCloud. Mobile employees can seamlessly access patient information, open productivity apps such as Office 365 and Sharepoint, connect to partner sites, and manage other tasks using single sign-on (SSO).
"With Web@Work, users can instantly connect to our healthcare portal using secure SSO,” said Niels van der Voort, Web Director at Cordaan. “Once they’ve logged in, they can securely and seamlessly access the intranet resources they need to complete tasks, such as updating patient information, without entering their credentials for each application. MobileIron also enabled us to configure the portal using Active Directory, so we can assign role-based profiles to ensure employees can only access the applications they are authorized to use,” he said.
In addition to Web@Work, Cordaan has also begun securely managing internal documents using MobileIron Docs@Work.
"We produce a lot of internal letters that need to be reviewed and signed by people within our organization,” said Arrianne Naber, Functional Applications Manager at Cordaan. This used to be a manual process, which was not very efficient. We are excited about using Docs@Work to quickly and securely distribute medical letters through our system. This will enable authorized users to upload, open, and edit letters right from their mobile devices so healthcare decisions can be made faster,” she said.
MobileIron helps Cordaan transform business processes from manual to mobile
Before going mobile, Cordaan’s mobile healthcare clinicians filled out all of their paperwork manually. For instance, when visiting patients in their homes, clinicians would have to manually record patient updates such as changes in their health or medication. These notes would then have to be entered in a desktop workstation back at the office. In addition to being a time-consuming process, paper-based files didn’t give clinicians the most current patient information.

Today, Cordaan manages about 3,750 company-owned devices across its mobile workforce. Although the initial deployment was multi-OS, Cordaan later decided to transition its entire mobile fleet to iOS devices provisioned through MobileIron. Cordaan is also leveraging the streamlined deployment and device supervision capabilities of Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (DEP), which helps organizations meet security and regulatory compliance requirements for devices, apps, and data. Patient confidentiality and clinician information are secured by strong password and encryption enforcement enabled by MobileIron. And, if a device is ever lost or stolen, IT can remotely lock the device and completely wipe all of the apps and data so they can’t be accessed by unauthorized users.
Looking ahead: Harnessing the power of mobile to meet long-term healthcare requirements
Cordaan is currently in the process of developing its first custom in-house app. Like the rest of its business apps, the in-house app will be pushed to iOS devices through DEP and secured by MobileIron. The company is also developing an internal app advisory board, a key best practice that will enable Cordaan to thoroughly vet proposed business apps to ensure they meet business requirements before rolling them out to the company.
Ultimately, by choosing MobileIron as its foundation for mobile security, Cordaan has taken a significant step toward meeting current and future healthcare regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
