What’s New: MobileIron Core 10.1

We are pleased to announce the general availability of MobileIron Core 10.1, the latest release of our on-premises, unified endpoint management (UEM) solution. As with past releases of both MobileIron Core and MobileIron Cloud (our subscription-based UEM offering), I’d like to share with you some of the top highlights of this new release. We continue to improve upon MobileIron’s comprehensive security platform and strive to introduce new use cases that enable our customers to: 1) streamline and automate the process of bringing user profiles to life, 2) ensure that employees’ business mobile experience mimics their personal mobile experience, and 3) protect the data.That said, let’s take a look at what’s new in Core 10.1.

Android advanced passcode

The number one challenge for any organization that enables mobile devices to access corporate data is that of keeping those devices secure. One of the most fundamental steps to take is to enforce device screen lock, most commonly via passcode. However, as mobile devices and operating systems evolve, time-saving alternatives to traditional passcodes are becoming more popular among users. Google’s Android platform now offers Smart Lock, which provides multiple options to users such as Bluetooth, location, iris, and face unlock, as well as voice match. Prior to MobileIron Core 10.1, we provided an “all or nothing” approach to Smart Lock. If an admin wanted to allow users time-saving alternatives to traditional passcodes by enabling Smart Lock, they were unable to apply more granular rules based on their level of comfort with more modern technologies. With Core 10.1, admins can be more selective in terms of the screen lock technologies to be made available to their users.

SAFETYNET Attestation

SAFETYNET Attestation is another Android feature that’s now supported in Core 10.1.  SAFETYNET Attestation provides greater visibility into Android devices as part of a “defense in-depth” strategy. MobileIron customers can more easily assess the security and compatibility of the Android environments in which their apps run. Why is this important? Because now they can easily identify devices running unapproved Android OS builds, such as devices running custom read-only memory (ROM) or rooted devices.  The result is improved data security, thanks to better Android device visibility. SAFETYNET Attestation works with any Android deployment: work profile, managed device, managed device with work profile, and device admin modes. It’s also important to note that SAFETYNET Attestation works together with MobileIron Threat Defense, which delivers unparalleled mobile threat detection and remediation, on-device, with no user action required.

Display custom terms of service

Next up, Core 10.1 can now display terms of service (TOS) when a user logs into an AppConnect enabled app. AppConnect is the critical part of our comprehensive security platform that enables protection of data at rest (on-device), without touching the user’s personal data. The user will not be granted access to AppConnect and its data until the TOS have been accepted. In addition, user permission will be logged for audit purposes. The key benefit here is that Core 10.1 now does even more to enable our customers in highly-regulated industries to maintain compliance.  

Admin-defined app dependencies

Now let’s talk about app dependencies. In Core 10.1, administrators have the ability to define app relationships. The admin defines if prerequisite apps are required for another app to function correctly, and bundles the apps together for app download or install. The Apps@work catalog informs the end user if an app has prerequisites and installs it in one click.This helps to drive down support costs by reducing the number of help desk tickets driven by challenges associated with app installs. Another direct benefit of admin-defined app dependencies is improved user experience, which helps to drive strategic app adoption and user productivity.

App Insights

Apps are at the heart of user productivity. For this reason, organizations continue to make significant investments in new ones—whether off-the-shelf or custom in-house apps—as a part of their comprehensive growth strategy. We’re pleased to introduce our new App Insights dashboard, which helps our customers measure the effectiveness of their app strategy. App Insights provides clear visibility into app metrics including apps by distribution, top-installed apps, and top-rated apps. MobileIron Core now provides a level of actionable insights that can help you justify the costs associated with app procurement and development, as well as ensure that app-driven compliance metrics are being met. Use App Insights to verify that the correct app versions have been installed (super-important in terms of minimizing risks of vulnerabilities introduced by apps), validate which apps that are not installed (but should be or are eligible to be installed), and compare app installations across platforms and versions.
