What iOS 5 Means for the Enterprise
|

After months of anticipation, Apple introduced iOS 5 and we wanted to share our perspective on its impact on the enterprise. This release streamlines the management of iOS devices and apps with new security and configuration options. These will be integrated into the MobileIron platform to preserve the iOS native user experience while improving IT's ability to secure corporate data.
Email Security
- Email forwarding
- IT can now turn off this setting so that corporate email cannot be forwarded through a personal account.
- This helps prevent corporate data loss and provides a cleaner separation between corporate and personal email.
- S/MIME enforcement
- IT can now mandate that all email utilize S/MIME, providing greater security and ensuring message integrity.
App Security
- App deletion
- Enterprises using MobileIron's Enterprise App Storefront for app discovery and distribution now have far greater control over the apps on a given device.
- IT can now delete any app that was installed using MobileIron.
- If users delete the MDM profile on their devices, IT can now force a selective wipe of corporate data that includes not just email, calendar and contacts but also all enterprise apps.
- App usage of email
- IT can now prevent apps from sending email so that corporate email addresses don't inadvertently leak.
- iCloud app sync
- IT can now disallow apps from syncing with iCloud or iTunes.
Additional Security and Configuration Options
- iCloud autosync
- IT can now turn off iCloud autosync so that device-side data is not synced to iCloud.
- Web Proxy configuration
- IT can now configure a web proxy instead of having to rely on the end-user to handle the configuration.
- Management enforcement
- IT now knows immediately if end-users delete their MDM profiles so that those users can be notified and quickly re-enrolled.
- Crash data
- IT can now decide if it wants to send crash data to Apple.
- Certificates from non-trusted sources
- IT can now decide whether or not an end-user can accept a certificate from a non-trusted source.
- IT can now also categorically prevent it.
- iTunes password entry
- IT can now require an iTunes password to make iTunes access more secure.
- Wi-Fi SSID auto-join
- IT can choose a configuration option that allows the user to automatically connect to a defined Wi-Fi network without requiring the user to manually select it from a list.
- Battery usage
- IT can now access device battery level information.
- Note: MobileIron was able to do this on earlier iOS versions as well using the MyPhone@Work app.
Impact of iOS 5
- Go Native
- People choose iOS devices because they love the native Apple user experience. They don't want to use, for example, a third-party email container. iOS 5 takes away the threat of emails being forwarded inappropriately so that users can use the native iOS email experience with IT's approval.
- Bring Your Own Device
- Enterprise IT has more visibility into what is happening with a device and more management options for security. This makes it safer and easier to allow employees to use their personal iOS devices for work.
- Mobile Apps
- With iOS 5, IT has greater control than ever before over apps and their data. This means that enterprises can, without hesitation, move forward with their enterprise app plans for iOS.
