Becoming the First Paperless Bank in Belgium
To stay competitive in the fast-moving financial services industry, Bank J.Van Breda & C° decided in 2008 to digitalize their business processes and ban all paper documents. To achieve this goal, the company began transitioning its mainframe banking system and distributed PC tablets to account managers so they could perform simple transactions, such as signing electronic documents, at the customer’s home or work site instead of at the branch office. By the end of 2014, all operational processes were digitalized and account managers were able to sign most of their documents electronically while working remotely. To move to the next step, Bank J.Van Breda & C° needed to replace their existing Windows PCs tablets with a device that supports faster and more interactive client engagements.
Informatica Van Breda – shared service center
Informatica Van Breda is a shared services center that delivers infrastructure services to three financial services companies including Bank J.Van Breda & C°, whose mobile deployment is featured here. The financial services companies are both shareholders and clients of Informatica Van Breda, which manages all of their IT processes. The software development is owned by each client company, which uses their own in-house development team to build custom applications. These applications are then deployed and managed through Informatica Van Breda.
Bank J.Van Breda & C° needed a comprehensive enterprise mobility management (EMM) solution to securely deploy and manage mobile apps, content, and devices. Although Bank J. Van Breda & C° had a product to manage its existing Windows mobile devices, the company needed a comprehensive mobile solution to secure other types of devices and apps. After evaluating several leading EMM providers, the company chose MobileIron.
“We tested other solutions, but none of them could meet all of our requirements, and we needed a good integrator located in Belgium. MobileIron and its reseller partner, Mobco, were the only providers who fulfilled all of our technology and integration requirements,” said Bert Van Hove, managing director of Informatica Van Breda.
With MobileIron, Informatica Van Breda can easily provision mobile devices and securely deploy and manage both custom-built and third-party business apps to any managed device. The MobileIron platform can also scale to support future mobility goals and requirements.
In addition to the PCs, the clients of Informatica Van Breda also used BlackBerry devices for mobile email. Due to BlackBerry’s diminishing market share and internal pressure to switch to a more flexible device model, Informatica Van Breda migrated off the platform.
The MobileIron platform helps Informatica Van Breda meet the bank’s mobility objectives by delivering custom-built apps as well as providing secure access to native iOS apps, such as Mail and Calendar, to all of their client’s mobile devices. By integrating MobileIron AppConnect with the Acronis Mobile Echo document management solution, Informatica Van Breda allows representatives to access PDFs, presentations, and other files from their mobile devices—giving them the tools to meet customer needs wherever they work.
Mobco is also pleased with the initial phase of the MobileIron deployment.

The Result: A Mobile Experience Customers Can Bank On
According to Marc Wijnants, CIO of Bank J.Van Breda & C°, the MobileIron platform is helping the bank evolve from a purely transaction-based mobile deployment to a more dynamic and interactive model of customer engagement. Key to that evolution is a platform which consistently provides day zero compatibility support for new mobile operating systems. MobileIron’s support for iOS devices and apps is critical to supporting this transformation.
“The PCs didn’t really enable the client interaction that we were aiming for. iPads are much more interactive and touch-enabled. And, because it’s always on and connected, the manager doesn’t have to wait for the device to start up. With the iPad, you just switch it on and client interaction can start in less than 30 seconds,” said Wijnants.
In addition, Apple devices offer a huge advantage over PCs because when used together with Apple TV, the account manager can give customer presentations on a larger screen—a capability the bank enabled in November 2014. By wirelessly connecting an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch directly to an Apple TV, the account manager can broadcast a presentation or an interactive simulation tool to a larger audience—all while completely avoiding the time-consuming network connection process. When secured and configured by MobileIron, an Apple TV is a highly secure device because only approved devices can be allowed to connect. Therefore, an Apple TV can’t be accessed or taken over by someone using an unmanaged device. The bank also plans to use these Apple devices for customer videoconferences and employee training, which will reduce the time and cost of traveling to meetings.
“Apple is introducing many new features with every iOS update, and it’s important for our management software to keep up with those innovations. MobileIron does this really well, so we can quickly take advantage of new mobile capabilities,” said Van Hove.
The Future: “A complete mobile and paperless Bank”
Bank J.Van Breda & C° is planning to mobilize its full banking application to iOS by the summer of 2015 and Informatica van Breda will provide the services to help the bank achieve this goal. The new mobile app will be deployed and supported through the MobileIron platform, and will allow account managers to provide more comprehensive customer service in a mobile environment.
“Our goal is to help Bank J.Van Breda & C° achieve their ultimate objective: To enable all of their account managers to be completely mobile so they can deliver any transaction, service, or process to their customers wherever they work,” said Van Hove. “With the MobileIron platform in place, we are well on our way to helping Bank J.Van Breda & C° achieve that goal.”
