EMM required for rapid deployment and management of iPhones
Daiichi Sankyo works under the philosophy of “contributing to the enrichment of quality of life around the world through the creation of innovative pharmaceuticals, and through the provision of pharmaceuticals addressing diverse medical needs.” The company also is committed to “continuously creating innovative pharmaceuticals.”
The company adopted iPhones in 2011 to give employees who visit medical institutions the ability to check schedules and respond to emails away from the office.
“At that time, we were using the mobile device management (MDM) platform provided by the carrier that delivered the iPhones,” explained Kazunori Usui, Group Manager of IT Strategy Department for Daiichi Sankyo. “The main use for MDM then was to remotely wipe a device when it was lost. When we replaced company landline Phone with iPhones, we needed more sophisticated capabilities and we began looking into making a switch to EMM.”
Meanwhile, more than 10,000 mobile devices needed to be secured and managed for employees who made external presentations using iPads.
“Previously we were outsourcing the management of these mobile devices to specialists. We wanted to reduce costs and cut time by automating the enrollment through the use of an Apple DEP,” Usui said.
Lower costs and improve security by switching to Box for EMM
Daiichi Sankyo was looking into introducing Box for EMM secure cloud storage. According to Takahiro Izumi, Daiichi Sankyo’s Manager of IT Strategy Department, “We definitely wanted to use Box instead of our file server to store materials. We didn’t want to force it with the carrier’s MDM, so we began looking for an EMM platform that would work with Box.”
By replacing its file server with Box for EMM, the company wanted significant operating cost savings, improved security, and better usability.
“The volume of data that could be saved on the file server was limited, causing our people to save data locally,” said Yuji Ishii of IT Strategy Department . “Using Box for EMM, we could expand the capacity of storage, eliminate files saved locally, and improve security.”
MobileIron meets the test
After comparing EMM platforms from several of the leading providers, Daiichi Sankyo selected MobileIron. In addition to MobileIron’s compatibility with DEP and Box for EMM, MobileIron separates personal and company data through the Open-In capability, giving the user greater flexibility. Daiichi Sankyo also required EMM management of VPN functionality to improve security on-site.
Another plus: Overseas companies that belonged to the Daiichi Sankyo Group had seen already success with MobileIron.
“Products from some of MobileIron’s competitors appeared to meet our needs, but when we actually tested them, they didn’t work, were slow, or performed insufficiently,” Izumi said. “In the end, MobileIron was the only logical choice.” In evaluating MobileIron, Izumi said, “Not only was MobileIron quick to respond to other companies’ new capabilities, but it presented a powerful vision for the future of EMM.”
More savings, more storage
Replacement devices are now handed over in the product packaging and users can use their device without IT needing to set it up. The settings come pre-configured through DEP. By accelerating device deployments, Daiichi achieved major time and cost savings.
By implementing MobileIron, the company accelerated device deployments, including the replacement of damaged or lost devices.
According to Izumi, “If we didn’t have MobileIron, we wouldn’t be able to send replacements when a device is lost or damaged. Previously it took three to five business days to configure and enroll a new device. That lead time was shortened to one business day after introducing MobileIron and implementing settings with DEP.”
The ability to use Box for EMM also had a major impact. Ishii said, “Box for EMM allowed us to increase the amount of storage space for users, so they could no longer save documents locally. Now all of our business data is securely uploaded to the cloud.”
For on-site security, the company has the ability not only to prohibit the installation of applications as a rule, but also to classify domains through Open-In and black-list management. While Daiichi Sankyo is still exploring this capability and others, Usui said, “MobileIron is very good with security when granular management is required.”
Meanwhile, Daiichi Sankyo is making good use of MobileIron’s other functionality, such as Apps@Work, to deliver business applications.
Next: BYOD management
As the company looks ahead, deploying business apps is a top priority. Daiichi Sankyo plans to further improve user experience with MobileIron per app VPN. According to Izumi, “We will be using MobileIron’s per app VPN capabilities to cut app deployment down to just a few taps.”
Daiichi Sankyo also is seeking to deploy MobileIron in its other group companies based in Asia.
Ishii said, “We plan to deploy MobileIron in group companies in China, Korea, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand. Some of these Asian subsidiaries are now considering a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to decrease costs. Subsidiaries need to be able to make good use of MobileIron’s functions such as per app VPN and the separation of personal and business content through Open-In.
Meanwhile, Daiichi Sankyo is considering the introduction of CYOD and BYOD in Japan in the future. The company is looking to MobileIron to support these programs as it expands business both in Japan and worldwide.
